New Hire Orientation / Onboarding In Second Life.

As Generation Y takes a larger share of the employment pool, corporate training departments are struggling to formalize the knowledge transfer process and adapt their learning programs to the new generation of workers. Generation Y is the first in history to have lived their entire lives with information technology. It is not easy for them to understand the world without it. "Chalk and talk" classroom lectures are not enough on their own to capture Generation Y’s attention and leverage their high levels of ambition and enthusiasm.

Another challenge is encouraging collaboration among the different generations of workers. New class of training simulations works well for all generations of employees. A good place to introduce this type of simulations is during new hire orientation. Second Life highly enriches your new hire orientation program, makes it more engaging and expierential and, possibly, asynchronous. Potential activities include:

  • Virtual environments resembling working place of the new hires (e.g. lab, warehouse, plant floor, hospital ER, etc.) where new hire can interact with the equipment, recieve instructions / demonstartions and work on accomplishing tasks, receive feedback and help when needed. The environments can be used for self-paced training, human-supervised training or with a robotic instructor
  • Environment where new hires can meet with the current company representatives, both formaly (e.g. introduction by company CEO) and informaly.
  • Simulations that teach basic soft skills (such as good time management skills, working under pressure, communication, leadership), as well as teamwork exercises that can both test how well the new hire fits into a particular group, as well as facilitate interaction between new hires and current employees.

We offer New Hire Orientation Package in Second Life, that includes any / all of the following components:

  • Building environments
  • Teamwork Simulation - works well for facilitating interaction between new hires and current employees, as well as testing how well new hire fits into a particular group
  • Robotic Instructors - which can log in Second Life on demand, provide a guided tour or a lesson for the new hire, and log out when the session is completed. During the session robotic instructors can ask trainee to repeat specific steps and provide trainee with a feedback.
  • Communication Simulation - for successfull onboarding new hires are often paired with a mentor - an older employee who can provide guidance, resources and answer questions during the introductory period. However, for the mentor program to be successfull both new hires and mentors need to know how to communicate, ask questions, converse a problem, reveal potential difficulties, etc. Communication simulations teaches just that.
  • Working Under Pressure Simulations - before assigning new hire a task it is good to know how he can handle job stress and how much his performence degrades under pressure. This can be done using Working Under Pressure simulation.

If you are interested in using any of the above components in your new hire orientation program, please, call (814)234-0900 or contact us to discuss your project specifications and arrange a demo.
